 DYNAMIC ALIGNMENT

EXPLORING BOUNDLESSNESS
IN ASANA AND BEYOND
ADVANCED 5-DAY WORKSHOPS
3 to 6 of August 2017

with Carrie Owerko
Senior Iyengar Teacher, New York

DyNAMIC Alignment
What do we mean when we use the term alignment? How are we distinguishing between posture and alignment? And how does our yoga practice inform our everyday movement, alignment, posture, and perspective?

Our yoga practice can serve our capacity to live a more fully embodied life. And by cultivating a dynamic sense of alignment we can increase not only our awareness but our ability to respond or do things in a variety of ways. Because life is unpredictable and dynamic, we need to be able to respond to life’s ever changing circumstances in multiple ways, depending upon what we encounter. Through an exploration of dynamic alignment we are better able to respond to life’s many joys and difficulties with a stable, yet fluid, grace.

In this workshop we will look at alignment as a process of exploring how things work rather than getting too caught up in how they look (that is, function over mere appearance). In this way alignment is an expressive and optimal functionality that is sustainable over time. Come and play with the process of dynamic alignment.

Come play with the dynamic of alignment process

asawackwxlboewnyepx9_fcxfafqxeest-sqz2ruazkCarrie Owerko has been teaching yoga and exploring the relationship between body, breath and mind for several years. She holds a Senior Intermediate Iyengar teaching credential and continues her studies with the Iyengar family by traveling to India on a regular basis, as well as by continuous and in-depth studies with her teacher, Patricia Walden.

Over the years she has performed in and co-choreographed many yoga demonstrations, including Live: Light on Life, performed at NYC’s City Center during BKS Iyengar’s Light on Life US National Book Tour in 2005.

Before studying yoga, Carrie worked as a Movement Analyst after having completed her studies at The Laban Institute in NYC. She studied theatre and dance in college and has spent years exploring human movement, meaning and communication.

Curiosity, openness, and affection are of the utmost importance in her approach to Iyengar Yoga, as is the integration of science, yoga philosophy, and the poetic imagination in the yoga practice. Most importantly, she loves to explore the relationship of discipline and playfulness and is a firm believer in the power of controlled folly.

 LEAP OF SPACE

Exploring Boundlessness
in Asana and Beyond

ADVANCED 3-DAY WORKSHOP
23 to 25 october 2015

with Carrie Owerko
Senior Iyengar Instructor, New York

Carrie Owerko

The image of a leap — especially the joyful, enthusiastic variety — is inspiring. The leap of devotion that is associated with Hanuman, the Hindu monkey deity, is an expression of such boundlessness. In this playful workshop we will work with several ways to cultivate a more joyful and harmonious relationship to both our internal and external use of space.

One such way is by exploring the concept of tensegrity. Tensional integrity, or floating compression, is a term popularized by the architect Buckminster Fuller. In this workshop we will play with this concept in asana using simple props and discover fun ways to experience our bodies as the buoyant, dynamically integrated wonders that they are.

Centripetal/centrifugal were terms that BKS Iyengar often used to describe one’s relationship to the core of one’s being and one’s relationship to the world. We will continue this inquiry – and in doing so not only expand our sense of kinesphere (the movement space, or space surrounding the body in stillness and in motion) but also include an excavation of an inner kinesphere. We will play with different ways to approach, enter, and exit poses as well as explore how our limbs relate to our center and vise versa. In this way we learn to more fully inhabit the harmonious space of our own body and become more at ease in the space that surrounds us.
