Yoga: Périple vers la lumière
a
vec John Schumacher

PerMission to Play

Play is my mission. It is one of the most powerful and joyful aspects of my yoga and movement practice. But it is even more than that. Play helps me live life with more enthusiasm and willingness to take risks, learn new things, and to reach beyond my perceived capabilities–when permit ourselves to play, we all can!
Play (like practice) is voluntary. It cannot be forced, just offered and facilitated. Playful practice does not mean that discipline is not involved. Yet play is way to ease expectations and expand our options, to give ourselves permission to learn, experiment and explore. That is what we will be doing in this workshop: playing within our yoga practice and playing with movement. It will be a space and place where there is PerMission to Play!

About Carrie

Carrie Owerko has been teaching yoga and exploring the relationship between body, breath, and mind for several years. She holds a Senior Intermediate Iyengar teaching credential, is a certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) and Functional Range Conditioning Mobility Specialist (FRCms), and continues her studies with the Iyengar family by traveling to India on a regular basis, as well as with continuous and in-depth studies with her yoga teacher, Patricia Walden. Over the years she has performed in and co-choreographed many yoga demonstrations, including Live: Light on Life, presented at City Center in NYC during BKS Iyengar’s Light on Life US National Book Tour in 2005.

Before studying yoga, Carrie earned a BFA in Dance and Theater, and graduated from the renowned Neighborhood Playhouse Theater School in NYC. Carrie then spent several years working for a Movement/Educational/Experimental Theater Company called The Irondale Ensemble Project. In addition to performing with Irondale she taught in the Alternative High Schools in NYC and at Rikers Island Correctional Facility. After Irondale, Carrie continued her inquiry and became a Movement Analyst (CMA) having completed her studies at The Laban Institute in NYC. She has spent years enthusiastically exploring human movement with the intention of helping people develop clearer, more fully embodied communication and expression.

Curiosity, openness, and affection are of the utmost importance in her approach to Iyengar Yoga, as is the integration of science, yoga philosophy, and the poetic imagination in the yoga practice. Most importantly, she loves to explore the relationship of discipline and playfulness and is a firm believer in the power of controlled folly.

Jules Mitchell MS, CMT, ERYT500 is a Las Vegas based yoga teacher, educator, and massage therapist. Her unique approach blends the tradition of yoga with her extensive study in biomechanics to help teachers develop their craft and empower them with education. Jules’s methods intend to achieve ease in movement through deliberate effort, thus her teachings integrate numerous modalities, balancing the somatic aspects of yoga with the most current exercise science. Bringing the most useful and applicable pieces of that science into the yoga community is her passion. She regularly contributes to teacher training programs and leads workshops and courses worldwide. Her book, Yoga Biomechanics: Stretching Redefined, is now available through Handspring Publishing. As adjunct faculty at ASU, she serves as a yoga consultant on various research studies measuring the effects of yoga therapy on special populations. Her most influential teachers include Leeann Carey (Yapana Yoga), Gil Hedley (Integral Anatomy), John Casey (yoga philosophy and Sanskrit), and the many dedicated scientists who collect, analyze and publish data so we may continue to ask more questions, even when it invokes a discerning analysis of tradition.

Hip Dynamics

Dynamics [dahy-nam-iks] noun

  1. The branch of mechanics that deals with the motion and equilibrium of systems under the action of forces, usually from outside the system
  2. The motivating or driving forces, physical or moral, in any field
  3. The pattern or history of growth, change, and development in any field

While the hip joint has the capacity to be a highly mobile joint, it also has the capacity to be quite strong. And contrary to conventional thought, flexibility and strength can be achieved together. Discuss why weakness may sometimes manifest as tightness, resist the urge to stretch yourself into common yoga postures, and discover the potential for utilizing isometrics in asana. Additionally, incorporate principles of co-contraction to help identify individual alignment variations. You’ll leave feeling strong and capable. Please bring a journal.

Shoulder Potential

The highly mobile shoulder complex can bear the weight of the body in yoga asana but does not always perform to its full potential. Instead, we often see limited range of motion, repetitive use injuries, and pain. In this 3-hour workshop, we’ll simplify all the complex anatomy you may have studied in the past and equip you with approaches to get stronger, move better, and feel better. You will learn upper extremity biomechanics, learn to assess quality of movement, and incorporate practices to improve shoulder function, promote change and develop mobility/stability. Apply these insights to a variety of asana including the everyday downdog. You may experience a departure from conventional cueing. Therefore, curious minds are encouraged. All shoulders are welcome – healthy or injured, strong or weak, hypermobile or not mobile enough. Please bring a journal.

Foot Fundamentals and Ankle Articulations

Stand up to your standing poses with the knowledge they deserve, knowledge based in biomechanics and traditional yoga.  In this 3-hour workshop with Jules Mitchell, we will explore standing postures from the ground up, increasing awareness of foot and ankle mobility and learning how gait patterns might be expressed in popular poses like Warrior 1, Triangle, and Tree. Get excited and challenged with Jules’ fun, functional, skill-based approach to teaching and learning. Expect to leave this workshop standing tall and proud about your standing postures.  Please bring a journal.  Notes and questions are encouraged.

This is Spinal Map

Navigate the architecture of the spine in this brief lecture followed by movement and practice.  Explore how the spinal curves evolved in response to gravity and how our limbs can leverage forces on the spine. Enhance your spinal mobility through phases of rest and repetition while gently and effectively building up to more challenging yoga poses. The workshop includes approaches to spinal articulations that consider current research on spinal biomechanics while addressing common misconceptions about back pain and spinal health. Please bring a journal.

Alison West, March 2020

Alison West
20, 21, 22 mars 2020
Atelier avancé avec Alison West

Alison West, Ph.D, E-RYT, C-IAYT is director of Yoga Union and the Yoga Union Backcare & Scoliosis Center. She first established Yoga Union in 1996 in SoHo after studying widely and teaching Yoga in NY for ten years, both at the Sivananda center and at Jivamukti. She practiced Astanga Yoga for a number of years, studying in NY with Eddie Stern and in Mysore with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. During this time she continued studying Iyengar Yoga for alignment, working in particular with Kevin Gardiner, the late Mary Dunn, and, later, Genny Kapuler. Alison has also traveled to Pune to study with the Iyengars as well. Her first studies at the Sivananda centers of Munich and NY in the early 80′s have led to a life-long interest in Yoga philosophy and the subtle practices of pranayama, meditation, mantra, yantra and mudra. She furthered her meditation studies with TKV Desikachar at a retreat at Colgate University in 1993 and went on to the Shambhala trainings in NYC. Her spiritual teachers include Ramana Maharshi and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

Prior to her becoming a full-time Yoga professional, Alison obtained her Ph.D in Art History (1985) at NYU’s renowned Institute of Fine Arts under H.W. Janson and Robert Rosenblum. Her now-classic book on French Sculpture, From Pigalle to Prèault: Neoclassicism and the Sublime in French Sculputre, 1760-1840, was published by Cambridge University Press n 1998 and reviewed in all important publications including The New York Review of Books. Alison was born and educated in Europe before returning to the States for university.

Around 1996, Alison’s interest in alignment and anatomy led her to explore more deeply the asymmetrical body and most notably the asymmetrical spine. She studied with both Bobbie Fultz and Elise Miller, each an expert in this field and to whom she is deeply grateful. Alison completed her Certification in Yoga for Scoliosis with Elise Miller. Alison has continued her study of anatomy and kinesiology and developed new material for Yoga for Scoliosis. In 2007, Alison co-founded the first and only dedicated Yoga for Backcare and Scoliosis center in the world. Alison’s current fully equipped, spacious and beautiful studio, Yoga Union, opened across the street from the old Backcare Center on 9/11, 2011. In 2015, Alison founded the new Yoga Union Backcare & Scoliosis Center, also at 37 West 28th street, which she runs with the help of an amazing group of dedicated teachers.

Your Amazing Shoulders and the Scapulo-Humeral Rhythm

Yoga students are regularly told to take the shoulders « down » or to keep the shoulders blades « on the back » when the arms are up. Learn what you really want to be doing/teaching by studying the wonderful scapulo-humeral (shoulder/upper arm) rhythm and how it is fundamental to a strong, safe and graceful practice. It is essential for poses like down dog and handstand, where the added stress of weight makes the scapulo-humeral rhythm even more important. Learn techniques to explore it and teach it, and also its benefits for spinal health. Alison will also introduce new thinking about the power of this rhythm in the context of entirely different and unexpected poses. This material will feed into the Headstand and Shoulderstand material. Anatomy and Asana All levels/ teachers Three hours

Secrets of Arm balances: from Bakasana to Mayurasana

Join Alison for an exciting and challenging Arm Balances workshop. You will use methodical Yoga Union tools developed by Alison, who will help you achieve ease in a variety of core-building arm balances of increasing complexity. Through careful attention to preparation, alignment and the supporting breath, you will be able to safely explore the foundation of this group of poses and overcome any hesitations you might have about practicing these wonderful odes to courage and strength. Come away with valuable practice and teaching tools. Three hours

Headstand, King of the Asanas Part I: Preparations for Beginners

Alison West has developed floor work for all inversions that clarify the actions called for in the actual poses. Learn how to prepare for and do headstand, the King of the asanas, with confidence, first while standing up, then lying down and finally upside down (or the right way up!). Please be familiar with the major standing poses and be able to do down dog without difficulty. Although this class introduces headstand to advanced beginners, it is also an excellent class for teachers wanting useful tools for teaching headstand. Advanced beginner / teachers Three Hours

À propos d’Alison

Alison has formulated Principles of Practice that can be applied to most forms of Hatha Yoga, and brings to her teaching insights born of the ongoing study of anatomy and kinesiology. She began her anatomy studies with Irene Dowd in NY, and subsequently completed Gil Hedley’s life-changing 6-day Human Dissection Course for non-medical professionals.

Alison conducts demanding “Gold Standard”* 200-hour Three-Pillars of Practice Teacher Trainings and a full 500-hour Mandala of Yoga Masters program in New York City, teaches workshops and master classes nationwide, in Europe and in the Middle East, and group and private classes in Manhattan. Yoga Union’s Teacher Trainings are registered with Yoga Alliance at both the 200- and 500-hour level.  She also leads the only 150-Hour Backcare and Scoliosis Certification Program in the world. She has completed an on-demand Yoga for Back Health for Yoga Journal, which you can download anytime (use code ALISONSAVES for discount). In June 2019, he will be leading a Backcare Retreat at Centro Santillan in Spain (near Malaga) and teaching the weekend before north of Barcelona in Girona at Espai de Ioga.

In 2007, Alison was a prime mover in the creation of Yoga for NY , the organization that represents all yoga studio, teachers and students in NY State, when the State attempted to license Yoga Teacher Trainings. She was unanimously elected Executive Director and Chair of Yoga for NY, which succeeded in defeating this licensing attempt with a bill signed into law by then Governor Paterson. She was featured on the front page of the NY Times during these events. She also went on to defeat the city’s attempt to impose a “class tax” on Yoga classes in spite of the prevailing view that this would be impossible to accomplish.

Brooke Myers – 30 Years of Teaching

Brooke Myers has studied yoga since 1973 and taught Iyengar Yoga since 1987. She has trained many times in India with the Iyengar family. Her primary teachers are Geeta Iyengar and the late Mary Dunn.

Brooke’s social conscience informs her teaching. “Yoga should be for everyone,” she says. “We have to make a real effort to go where the need is.” Her outreach efforts have taken her to psychiatric hospitals and a drug rehabilitation center. She co-taught the Institute’s HIV/AIDS class for many years. Brooke has taught special classes for knee and back problems, depression, and menopause.

The spiritual aspect of Iyengar Yoga inspires her teaching style, which is simple, reverent, and aspiring. “To motivate people, you have to first give them the experience. I can’t talk to them about their breath or their inner self. I have to show them that if they learn to come back into their heels and lift their chest, they won’t feel so depressed. I have to find physical ways to show them spiritual and emotional states.”

Brooke’s previous career was in radical experimental dance and theater. Along with political causes, she is active in animal rescue.

“I’m still looking for ways to use yoga to bridge the gulf between all kinds of people,” she says. “It should be possible—one of the meanings of yoga is union.”

Brooke Myers - avril 2018

Brooke Myers

7 et 8 avril 2018
VIVRE DANS LE DOMAINE DE L’ÂME: Le yoga comme science et art – LIVING IN THE FIELD OF THE SOUL:  Yoga as a science and an art

Yogacharya BKS Iyengar interpreted the Bhagavad Gita through the 8 limbs of Yoga; the body being a field, the soul as the farmer of that field.  To every pose he brought both a scientific inquiry and a poetic interpretation.  As practitioners we may choose to study asana, pranayama–all limbs of Yoga–as bodily, even medical treatments.  Or reflecting on creative images, we may contact the inner levels of our being through the practice.

In this workshop we will explore these different ways, seeing where they touch.

Brooke Myers – 30 ans d’enseignement.
